reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow

Friday, April 7, 2006–Thursday, June 22, 2006

What are young photographers up to at the outset of the twenty-first century? How do they see the world? How much do they respect, build on, or reject tradition? Are they busy in the darkroom or the computer lab—or both? reGeneration: 50 Photographers of Tomorrow, which opens at Aperture Gallery on Friday, April 7, sets out to discover answers to these intriguing questions, previewing the work of fifty photographers who, if they live up to their promise, will emerge as some of the finest of their generation. (See list of participating artists on page three.) The exhibition, which had its debut at the world-renowned Musée de l’Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, last year, will tour the United States following its run at Aperture Gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a stunning catalog of the same title that will be published by Aperture to coincide with the opening of the exhibition.

This remarkable exhibition is the broadest and most enterprising survey of its kind, showcasing the creativity, ingenuity, and inspiration of fifty up-and-coming photographic artists in over one hundred and fifty superb images. William A. Ewing, Nathalie Herschdorfer, and Jean-Christophe Blaser, curators at Musée de l’Elysée, selected the photographers from hundreds of candidates submitted by more than sixty of the world’s top photography schools. The panel’s choices were made with one key question in mind: are these images likely to be known in twenty years’ time? The results show that, as the new century builds momentum, the art of photography is alive and well, and that photographers of extraordinary talent are already making their mark.

A special reception with the artists and curators will take place on Wednesday, April 19 at 6:00 p.m. The following day, Thursday, April 20, at 6:30 p.m., Aperture will host a panel discussion with curators William A. Ewing and Nathalie Herschdorfer and artists Idris Kahn, Josef Schulz, Angela Strassheim, Shigeru Takato, and Chih-Chien Wang. All events will take place at Aperture Gallery.

The New York presentation of reGeneration received generous support from Jaeger-LeCoultre. Additional support was provided by Pro Helvetia, Arts Council of Switzerland, and by Innis and Gunn.
