At Aperture Gallery and Bookstore - New York, NY

Special Event

Martin Parr and Eric Miles on The Chinese Photobook

Wednesday, April 22

7:30 p.m. EDT

Aperture Gallery and Bookstore, 547 West 27th Street, New York, NY

This event is free for students with ID and Aperture Members at the $50 level and above.

The Chinese Photobook, a traveling exhibition and book to be released this May, is the first and most complete examination of the subject. Through a survey of both well-known and largely undiscovered books, it reveals an overlooked thread in the history of photography. Both the exhibition and the deluxe, lavishly produced volume are based on a collection compiled by Martin Parr and Beijing- and London-based Dutch photographer team WassinkLundgren.

Join Aperture Foundation for a conversation between Martin Parr, curator and editor of The Chinese Photobook and Eric Miles, director of rare books at photo-eye, moderated by Aperture’s Lesley A. Martin. They will discuss the revival of the photobook, with particular reference to China and its history of rich and diverse photobook publishing.

Lesley A. Martin is the director of special projects at Aperture Foundation and publisher of The PhotoBook Review. She has curated several exhibitions, including The Ubiquitous Image and Aperture Remix, a commission-based exhibition celebrating Aperture’s sixtieth anniversary, and has edited more than eighty-five photobooks, including Rinko Kawauchi’s Illuminance, LaToya Ruby Frazier’s The Notion of Family, and forthcoming books by Richard Misrach and Mickalene Thomas. In addition to her work on The Chinese Photobook, she was a contributing editor to Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and ’70s and The Latin American Photobook. Her writing on photography has been published in ApertureFOAMOjo de Pez, and Lay Flat, among other publications. In 2011, she cofounded the Paris Photo–Aperture Foundation PhotoBook Awards. She currently teaches a graduate course on photobooks at the Yale University School of Art.

Eric Miles has been director of photo-eye’s rare book and print auctions since 2004. He consults on advertising and publishing projects and has written on photography and photobooks for various publications, most recently an essay for 10 x 10 Japanese Photobooks.

Martin Parr is a key figure in the world of photography. In addition to his work as a photographer and curator, he is a renowned collector of photographic books, and the coauthor with Gerry Badger of The Photobook: A History, volumes I to III (2004–14). He has been a contributor, curator, and advisor to several other projects about the photobook, including The Latin American Photobook (Aperture, 2011). He has published over seventy photobooks of his photographs, including most recently, Life’s a Beach (Aperture, 2012), The Non-Conformists (Aperture, 2013), Black Country Stories (2014), and We Love Britain (2014). His work is also in the collections of museums worldwide, including the J. Paul Getty Museum, Los Angeles; Museum of Modern Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; Metropolitan Art Museum, Tokyo; and Tate Modern, London. Parr is a member of Magnum Photos.
