At Aperture on Saturday, November 2, W. M. Hunt led Outsider/Insider, a workshop on collecting and connoisseurship. Hunt, a longtime collector, curator, and consultant who has been teaching for more than two decades, is also a natural storyteller: he expounded on his personal experiences and expertise before pushing students to articulate and develop their own tastes. Before the workshop, Hunt had asked participants to put together a portfolio of at least five photographs made by others, images they believed reflected their taste, were influential to them, or provoked them. During the day, he reviewed each portfolio individually. The course brought together professionals of varied backgrounds for a valuable lesson in the language of looking.

From the students:

“Hunt uses language clearly, colorfully, and intelligently. His stories—along with the whys and wherefores—were extremely valuable.”

“Hearing Mr. Hunt talk about his relationship to photographs and the pictures he likes was enlightening.”

Join W.M. (Bill) Hunt for a one-day workshop intended for photographers wishing to learn from a non-photographer who has been looking at and talking about images for forty years. Hunt is a longtime collector, curator, and consultant who has been teaching for more than two decades. Participants are asked to put together a portfolio of at least five photographs made by others, images they believe reflect their taste, are influential to them, or provoke them.  The workshop will focus on influences, how to look at photographs, considerations for analyzing them, and tips for being articulate about them.

W. M. Hunt is a frequent lecturer on the art of collecting and an adjunct professor at the School of Visual Arts, New York. An earlier, critically acclaimed exhibition of his collection was launched at Les Rencontres d’Arles Photographie in 2005 before traveling to the Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland, and FOAM, Amsterdam.
