Aperture Magazine Awards and Honors

The International Photography Awards

The International Photography Awards salute the achievements of the world’s finest photographers, discover emerging talent, and promote the appreciation of photography. The annual Lucie Awards pay tribute to the year’s most outstanding photographic achievements.

  • 2007 Photography Magazine of the Year

National Magazine Awards

The National Magazine Awards honor print and online magazines for superior execution of stated editorial objectives, innovative editorial techniques, noteworthy journalistic enterprise, and imagination and vigor in layout and design. Known as the “Ellie,” this important award represents magazine journalism’s highest honor and is considered the “Oscar of the publishing industry.”

  • 2007 Photojournalism Finalist
Aperture was nominated for “Silhouettes: Muslim Women of the Middle East and Afghanistan” by Caroline Mangez, photographs by Alexandra Boulet; Winter 2006 issue.

“Picture after picture makes the non-judgmental cumulative case that there is no one kind of Muslim woman and they do so with a range of photographic styles that share a mastery of composition and light .” —Judge's citation

  • 2006 General Excellence Finalist (circulation under 100,000)
Aperture was nominated for its Spring, Fall, and Winter 2005 issues.

"Aperture surprises, disturbs, reassures and enlightens. Whether chronicling the atrocities of the world’s psychiatric wards or presenting languid scenes of the North Carolina shore in the 1970s, this magazine of fine photography manages to simultaneously reflect our world and present it in an entirely new light." —Judge’s citation

  • 2006 Photo Portfolio/Photo-Essay Finalist
Aperture was nominated for “A Procession of Them: The Plight of the Mentally Disabled” by Eugene Richards, Spring 2005 issue; Yolanda Cuomo, art director.

"Photographer Eugene Richards documents with haunting detail and profound compassion the psychiatric facilities and plight of the mentally disabled worldwide. Though the tonality of black and white photography and gripping composition, he takes us to places where few have journeyed and communicates the suffering and abandonment of a forgotten part of humanity." —Judge’s citation

  • 2005 Photo Portfolio/Photo-Essay Finalist
Aperture was a finalist for “Loretta Lux’s Changelings” by Diana C. Stoll, Spring 2004 issue.
