"It felt very natural that after marriage, vacuum cleaners and pots and pans found their way into my photographs; these objects symbolize the apprehensions all sorts of women, no matter what part of the world they live in, still have about married life. Women are consigned to daily, repetitive routines, which is why I named the series "Like Every Day." The photographs are not authentic documentations, but instead deal with current social issues."—Shadi Ghadirian
Aperture is pleased to release a very special limited-edition photograph by Iranian photographer Shadi Ghadirian. Aperture first highlighted her series, Like Every Day, in issue 197 of Aperture magazine. This photograph is being offered to our collectors framed with a 4-ply archival matt. As the Saatchi Gallery noted in an online showcase of the artist's work, "[Ghadirian's] images describe a positive and holistic female identity, humorously taking issue with the traditional roles by which women—both in the Middle East and universally—have been defined. [Here,] Ghadirian uses an ordinary kitchen utensil as a readymade pun.... Her cast of crudely rendered women cleverly reinvents the sources of negative stereotyping as attributes of empowerment." |
