Pictured above is the first-ever specially created cover of Aperture made by Robert Rauschenberg for the 40th issue of the magazine. In the accompanying text, the Aperture editors write:

“Since no single image could serve to represent the last forty years, we looked to Rauschenberg—knowing that among his extraordinary talents he is a superlative collagist—to create a cover that would visually and metaphorically give a sense of Aperture.”
