description
Ellen, 2004 is from Gary Schneider’s Nudes series, which explores issues of identity and photographic processes. In Nudes, the skin tones are lush and luminous as they emerge from the darkness, yet these portraits also disturb as a result of the exaggerations and irregularities–the blurred traces of unconscious gesture matched with a stiffness that implies physicality and morality within each body. What we see is the result of long exposures of between one and three hours made in total darkness. The subject is lying down. Schneider explores the surfaces of the skin with a small flashlight. Due to the prolonged time required and the inevitable movements and consequential distortions that occur in the process, the results both reveal and obscure the intimate physical details and emotions of the individual who poses. Ellen, 2004 comes with a limited-edition book entitled Nudes (Aperture 2005). Both the photograph and book are signed and numbered by Gary Schneider and enclosed in a specially designed slipcase. |
