Description

“Under the microscope, I found that snowflakes were miracles of beauty… Every crystal was a masterpiece of design and no one design was ever repeated. When a snowflake melted, that design was forever lost. Just that much beauty was gone, without leaving any record behind.”—Wilson A. Bentley

Mike and Doug Starn share the fervency of Wilson Bentley, who in the late nineteenth century, in the small town of Jericho, Vermont, made history with his pioneering work in the area of photomicrography of snowflakes. “The snowflakes are these weird, gorgeous, phenomenal, transitory bits of architecture. They are the pieces of everyone,” write the Starns. And like Bentley, they have found ways to preserve the ephemeral record of snowflakes, capturing the tiny structures with a crystalline clarity that is breathtaking.

This innovative volume was designed by Jonas Frank as a catalog for their exhibition at the Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm, in 2007. In effect, however, it is an exquisite inkjet portfolio of nineteen of the Starns’ snowflake prints, suitable for framing. Along with an insightful introduction by Andy Grundberg and story by Lafcadio Hearn, Mike + Doug Starn: alleverythingthatisyou also includes a 30 x 24-inch foldout poster of the works, designed by the Starns themselves.—JL
