Communications

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Communications Work Scholar contributes to the Communications Department in various capacities, including: preparing and assembling press material for distribution to members of the media; updating web site content; writing promotional copy; coordinating e-blasts; maintaining accurate records of all external communications; circulating press clippings to sales representatives and other key constituents; researching outlets and contacts for publicity outreach; daily contact with media outlets; and assisting in events at Aperture Gallery, including opening receptions for exhibitions, book signings, lectures, and panel discussions.
Requirements
Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel; some experience with Adobe Photoshop, database programs, and e-mail marketing software; excellent communication, writing, and organizational skills; and a genuine passion for the arts.

Design

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Design Work Scholar assists Aperture’s in-house design department with both printed and digital ephemera. Design projects include books, catalogs, ads, exhibitions, signage, posters, website graphics, e-vites, and invitations. Responsibilities include working on layouts, setting and correcting type, communicating with various departments to follow through on projects, and conceptual design on selected projects. Work Scholars attend design meetings with artists and department heads and acquire hands-on experience. They will learn to present ideas and work with clients, and will bring away strong portfolio pieces.
Requirements
Expertise with InDesign and working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator required (all on Mac). Knowledge of HTML and CSS encouraged but not required. Strong layout and typography skills, creativity, attention to detail, and self-motivation will enhance a candidate’s application.

Development

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Development Work Scholar assists the development staff in all aspects of fundraising, including research, data management, preparation of grant proposals, donor cultivation, and direct-mail appeals. Responsibilities include updating and maintaining the donation database, assisting in special events, researching prospective foundations and individuals, and preparing solicitation packages and other fundraising materials.
Requirements
Advanced experience with Microsoft Office, especially Word and Excel; strong working grasp of database programs such as DonorPerfect or Raiser’s Edge; excellent communication and grammar skills.

Digital Media

Commitment: Full-time; Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Digital Media Work Scholar collaborates with Aperture staff to enhance the foundation’s online presence. The work scholar is responsible for posting updated information about events and exhibitions; researching and revising the web links and resources featured on the website; ensuring the cross promotion of books, prints, events, exhibitions, and web exclusives; and helping to edit video and audio footage from events. Additionally the Digital Media Work Scholar works with a variety of departments to produce original video, audio and written content for both the main site and Aperture’s blog. This is a great opportunity to work on the social media and online presence of a leading arts institution.
Requirements
Strong writing, and photo editing skills, creativity, attention to detail, and self-motivation will enhance a candidate’s application, as well an awareness of current trends in photography and video production. A strong working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop, Final Cut Pro X and content management systems is required.

Editorial (books or magazine)

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 4
The Editorial Work Scholars assist the editors in both the book and the magazine departments. Responsibilities include: picture and text research; contacting museums, galleries, and individuals to request artwork for reproduction; proofreading; compiling copy for catalogs and book jackets; development and publicity support; and registering copyrights. Editorial Work Scholars also have the opportunity to collaborate in managing the first stages of Aperture’s online photography competition, gaining valuable skills in assessing the potential of contemporary photography for publication.
Requirements
A working grasp of the photographic field, excellent grammar and communication skills, the ability to multitask and take initiative, a high level of attention to detail and organization, strong communication skills, as well as prior editorial experience will enhance a candidate’s application. Experience using Adobe Photoshop, handling physical artwork and digital files, and some knowledge of HTML preferred. Because of the nature of this position, applicants should be native English speakers.

Education

Commitment: Full-time; Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Education Work Scholar assists the Education Director with planning, promoting, and managing all education programs and conferences both at Aperture and off-site. This will include managing the education program schedule, communicating with and assisting workshop artists, managing class registrations/refunds, answering inquiries regarding educational events, photographic education and on-line education research, maintaining files, assisting with artist-talk events and follow-up, and contributing to the development of new educational programs in support of the Aperture Foundation’s mission.
Requirements
An interest in arts education; some educational experience in photography; proficiency in MS Office; phone, people, and social skills as well as excellent communication and grammar skills; ability to multitask and take initiative; and a positive outlook!

Exhibitions

Commitment: Full-time; Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Exhibitions Work Scholar assists with the promotion of the Traveling Exhibition Program. Responsibilities include: maintaining files on existing exhibition venues; researching potential venues; updating mailing list of potential venues; assisting in the creation of exhibition kits and their mailing to potential venues; coordinating exhibitions; maintaining the museum/gallery database; assisting with Aperture Gallery openings; following up on proposals sent and pinpointing specific interests of institutions so that Aperture can target proposals strategically.

Finance and Administration

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Finance Work Scholar assists in all aspects of finance and administration, including budgeting and analysis, collections, data management, project tracking, contract review, vendor analysis, office management, filing, and tracking attendance.
Requirements
Good quantitative skills and attention to detail; proficiency in Word and Excel; familiarity with database programs; ability to multitask and take initiative; strong phone and people skills a plus. This is an excellent position for someone with an interest in the business side of publishing.

Library and Digital Archive

Commitment: Full-time (min. 3 days per week); Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Library and Digital Archive work-scholar assists in organization and circulation activities for Aperture Foundation’s in-house Library and also supports digital archives projects related to the development of file hierarchy systems and information structures. Responsibilities include: responding to borrowing requests; acquiring and integrating newly released Aperture Foundation titles into Library storage; maintaining and updating Library collection inventories and bibliographic office reference guides; design and construction of protective sleeves for the Master archival set of Aperture Foundation titles; assisting in the organization of submissions for the annual PhotoBook Awards; and assisting staff in the preparation and transfer of materials to archives storage at the Millerton facility.
Requirements
Organizational skills and high level of attention to detail; ability to work independently and collaboratively; skills and initiative to conduct research; dexterity for safe book-handling practice; familiarity with the Chicago Manual of Style, or other scholarly standard style guides; interest in librarianship, the field of publishing, and photography; ability and willingness to occasionally lift boxes weighing up to 50 pounds, and willingness to travel to the Aperture Foundation facility located in Millerton, New York. Preference will be given to candidates with a background of study in Library or Information Sciences.

Magazine Circulation (marketing and advertising)

Commitment: Part-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Magazine Circulation Work Scholar assists the Publisher of the magazine in all facets of circulation, marketing, and advertising. Responsibilities include: subscription customer service, assisting in advertising promotion work, preparing media kits, maintaining ad prospect databases and mailing lists, interfacing with fulfillment house, coordinating ad materials with the production department, assisting in generating and providing first drafts of subscription web site promotions, and researching new business sources.
Requirements
Proficiency in MS Office, strong phone and people skills, and an ability to multitask and take initiative. This is an excellent position for someone with an interest in the business side of publishing.

Production

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Production Work Scholar assists the Production Manager in producing Aperture’s books and quarterly magazine. Responsibilities include handling artwork; reviewing project specifications with editorial staff and designers; communicating with suppliers; maintaining department schedules; preparing artwork for print and web use; archiving physical and digital files; trafficking packages; reviewing status of overseas shipments; and preparing manufacturing orders.
Requirements
Familiarity with Microsoft Office, Photoshop, and In-Design required. Experience in studio photography and digital printing a plus.

Sales

Commitment: Full-Time, Work Scholars accepted per season: 1
The Sales Work Scholar assists staff members responsible for book and print sales. Responsibilities include identifying new sales opportunities and researching prospective new clients; assisting in creating seasonal sales materials, including the book catalogs and dummies; assisting with the selection and production of images for the limited-edition photographs program; managing sales and inventory spreadsheets; preparing sales information for Aperture’s book distributors; assisting with the preparations required to attend art fairs and trade shows; and assisting with special mailings. The Sales Work Scholar is also responsible for maintaining the bookstore—stocking products, merchandising, keeping things looking presentable to the visiting public. A good amount of time is spent interacting with the public about all of Aperture’s products in the bookstore as well as offsite at art fairs and trade shows.
Requirements
A passion to learn about the business aspects of photography book and print sales; as well as a working knowledge of the history of photography; excellent written and communication skills; the ability to engage with customers and assist with purchases; the ability to multitask; the ability to take initiative and work independently; and a working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
