From the Work Scholar Desk: Salon Event With Artist Trevor Paglen

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

tp_31 photo by Trevor Paglen

As the Work Scholar in the Development Department, I work behind the scenes on special exclusive events at Aperture, focusing on programming for our Patrons and SNAP! Members. Being a member at Aperture gives you access to exclusive events such as private salons and studio tours with Aperture artists. Most importantly, members of Aperture get to meet and mingle with other photography enthusiasts and continue cultivating their knowledge and appreciation of photography through Aperture.

One such recent event was an artist talk with Trevor Paglen last Tuesday night in the cozy Aperture bookstore with couches, warm apple cider and savory treats. During the event, Trevor met with several fans in this intimate setting, gave a slide show presentation of his work and signed books. Trevor Paglen’s book Invisible: Covert Operations and Classified Landscapes, released by Aperture this Fall, presents a portrait of the covert activities of U.S. military and intelligence agencies. Paglen’s presentation brought new insights to his mysterious and highly technical imagery.

Leading up to this Salon event I helped with the invitations our guests, keeping track of the RSVP list and researching catering options. It was gratifying to see the event through to fruition, from its organization to becoming a special occasion, in which the guests had good time.

This Work Scholar post is by Development Work Scholar Sunny Ching Hui Wang.

Sunny is a graduate student at New York University in the Visual Arts Administration program. She received her B.A. in Art History and Visual Culture from Michigan State University in 2009. Her favorite Aperture publications include William Christenberry’s Kodachromes and Paolo Ventura’s Winter Stories. When not busy writing her Master’s thesis on crowd-funding for the arts, Sunny enjoys spending time in her East Village neighborhood.

States of Flux Opening Reception at Aperture Gallery

Monday, June 21st, 2010

Join Aperture this Thursday, June 24th for the opening reception of States of Flux, a summer show of student work from Parsons The New School for Design’s BFA and MFA photography programs. The reception will be hosted by SNAP! the Aperture Young Patrons Program and marks Aperture’s ongoing mission to support the work of promising young artists.

States of Flux was conceived as an examination of ways in which an emerging generation of artists are contending with forces of rapid technological change, new found potential for immediate mass distribution and consumption of images, as well as the burden of almost-immediate, unplanned (or planned) obsolescence of the photograph. The show’s artists are engaged in discourse about post-photographic realism while picturing the complexity of contemporary reality.

Aperture Foundation and the Center for Photographic Media and Culture at Parsons The New School for Design are pleased to announce States of Flux, a group exhibition of works by Parsons’ students, will be on view at the Aperture Gallery June 24th through August 12th, 2010.

The twelve artist’s in States of Flux, selected from the BFA and MFA photography programs at Parsons The New School for Design, consider the need to produce and consume images while simultaneously addressing the changing nature of the medium itself.

Artists Ho Chang, Chang Kyun Kim, Grady O’Connor, and Nathan Harger consider the physical impact of consumer-effected environments. Working with the shift in image-making from the indexical to the digitally malleable, artists Sally Dennison, Haley Jane Samuelson, Jun Ahn, and Bobby Davidson confront the state of flux that the self encounters in digital space. Artists Lauren Pascarella, Marie Vic, Luke Burke, and Rachel Porter confront the desire to consume. And Merve Unsal, Patrick Taylor, Erica Campbell, and Olga Migliaressi-Phoca employ photographic projection and video strategies to critique systems of power.

Pics and video clip from SNAP! Out of Winter Party

Friday, April 9th, 2010

SNAP! Aperture’s young patrons program provides an opportunity for photography enthusiasts and collectors to support and participate in the arts. The affordable membership fee includes meet-the-artists events, informal educational activities, invitations to Aperture exclusive parties and salon events at collector’s homes, all to foster the growth of an exciting, vibrant community of like-minded photo enthusiasts.

Aperture’s SNAP! Out of Winter Party this past March was the latest SNAP! fiesta and it was a great success. The party was co-chaired by Jen Bekman, Christina Cahill, and Alan Stoga, and ticket proceeds helped to support the Aperture Fund for Emerging Artists. Established patrons, curators, dealers and photographers as well as newcomers to the photography community all enjoyed a night of live music by The Cangelosi Cards, tastings of fine scotch by Dewar’s and Chandon bubbly while enjoying delicious signature cakes. The event was sponsored by Polaroid and several lucky raffle winners posed for instant large format portraits shot with a rare 20×24 Polaroid Camera.

Events from SNAP! Aperture’s new Young Patrons Program

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Watch a video excerpt from the latest exclusive SNAP! event: a photobook collecting workshop at Swann Auction Galleries. Daile Kaplan, Vice President and Director of Photographs at Swann Galleries, New York’s oldest specialty auction house, presented this event going through the history of photobook collecting where SNAP! members were able to engage with the actual books. In this clip, Kaplan explains how 1952 was a crucial year for the development of the photographic medium with their first auction dedicated to Photographica and the creation of Aperture magazine, followed by her valuable advice on how to build one’s photography books collection.
