Announcing the 2009 Aperture Portfolio Prize Winner and Runners-Up

2009 Aperture Prize-winner Alexander Gronsky, Untitled, n.d., from the series The Edge

All of us at Aperture Foundation would like to thank everyone who submitted work to the 2009 Aperture Portfolio Prize. This year, Aperture’s editorial and limited-edition print departments—four staff members and three work scholars in all—reviewed over seven hundred portfolios. Our challenge was to select one top prize and five honorable mentions from this overwhelming response. Thus, we are pleased to present Alexander Gronsky’s The Edge/Pastoral as this year’s winner. Congratulations also to Keliy Anderson-Staley, Off the Grid; Alejandro Cartagena, Lost Rivers; Maureen Drennan, Meet Me in the Green Glen; Jason Hanasik, He Opened Up Somewhere Along the Eastern Shore; and Mark Lyon, Landscapes for the People.

Alexander Gronsky’s work, The Edge/Pastoral, will be included in next week’s Slideluck Potshow presentation at Aperture Gallery. Buy tickets now and come get a first look at this year’s Prize winner’s work!

SLIDELUCK POTSHOW is a NYC-based arts non-profit, operating in many cities globally, that aims to bring people together around food and art, and to give people an interesting, engaging, and fun platform for sharing art with their community. We are pleased to announce that Slideluck Potshow XIV will be taking place on Friday, November 13, 2009 at  Aperture Gallery and will be co-curated by Lesley Martin, Aperture’s book publisher.

The theme of their fourteenth show in New York City is INSIDE OUT.  This could be about being on the outside, looking in.  Or it might be about the idea of space:  boundaries, architecture, interiority.  Give us something against type, that reverses the expected order of things – work that turns things upside down, or rather, INSIDE OUT.  The submission deadline is Monday, October 26th.

Guidlines can be found here.

Slideluck Potshow united the photography community at Canoe Studios last week in New York City for a unique evening with a potluck-style dinner followed by a showcase of artist’s photographic slideshows. Both emerging and established artists were represented, including Aperture’s Michael Wolf and his series The Transparent City, which takes an in depth look at the environment and its inhabitants of urban Chicago as well as Aperture’s Brian Ulrich, showing his newest series Dark Stores. The non-profit organization, Slideluck Potshow is devoted to building and strengthening community around food and art.  In addition, it is their objective to promote public appreciation of the visual arts and to provide art education opportunities to school-age children in New York City.  Slideshow events are now taking place in about forty cities globally:  from Stockholm, to São Paulo, to San Francisco.
