Congratulations to all the students nominated for Photo Camp, presented by Aperture and Sony!

BFA and MFA students will join us from both New York and California schools including Yale University, New York University, Columbia, School of Visual Arts, Long Island University at C.W. Post, Rochester Institute of Technology, Pratt, Fashion Institute of Technology, Parsons/The New School, NY Film Academy, CalArts, Art Center College of Design, UC Santa Barbara, CSU Long Beach Brooks Institute, CSU San Bernadino, Santa Monica College.

Photo Camp is a unique, educational experience, presented by Sony and Aperture Foundation, that will take place on consecutive weekends in New York and Los Angeles during April. These 3-day events are designed to foster community and new learning opportunities for local university photography students, utilizing Sony’s strengths in technology and Aperture’s commitment to encouraging excellence.  Sony Artisans of Imagery will lead hands-on workshops on the theme “The Culture of NOW” at both Paper Chase Press in Los Angeles and Aperture Gallery and Bookstore in New York.  An exhibition of select images from the workshop will be on view at Aperture Gallery this summer.

About Sony Artisans of Imagery Based on synergies between their unique styles of photography and Sony’s line of DSLR cameras, Sony hand-selected six professional photographers to be included in its Artisans of Imagery program. These pro photographers include Nigel Barker, Andy Katz, Me Ra Koh, David McLain, Christina Mittermeier, Brian Smith and Matthew Jordan Smith. Throughout the year, these photographers have been lecturing and providing educational workshops at U.S. universities and photography festivals. Additionally, their work has been featured in books, editorial content, advertising campaigns and worldwide exhibitions. Eye on the Strand Exhibition Opening at Pratt Institute TONIGHT

Aperture, Pratt, and the Strand book store present an exhibition featuring the winners and runners-up of the Eye on the Strand photography contest. A special exhibition on view at the Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery will showcase the winning images of grand prize winner Josh Robinson Strand Shadows, second-place winner Cary Conover Upside Down, third-place winner and viewers’ choice winner Manjari Sharma Strand, The Dreamer’s Land, as well as the work of twenty finalists. The winners were selected by a prestigious panel of judges from over five hundred submissions of unique and creative photographic representations of the Strand book store. As the grand prize winner, Josh Robinson will receive a collection of fifty Aperture photography books, lunch with internationally renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark courtesy of Balthazar Restaurant, a $100 Blurb Gift card, a one-year subscription to Aperture and New York magazine, and his photograph on exhibition at Pratt CCPS Gallery as well as the Strand’s online Photo Gallery.

“Eye on the Strand” Contest Winners

Aperture, Pratt, and the Strand Book Store are pleased to announce the winners of the Eye on the Strand photography contest, which kicked off last fall and concluded March 31, 2009. The winners were chosen by a prestigious panel of judges from over 500 submissions featuring unique and creative photo representations of the Strand Book Store. The Grand Prize Winner will get to have lunch at New York City’s famous Balthazar Restaurant with world-renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark, and receive a collection of Aperture books, among other prizes.

The work of the grand prize, second and third place winners and twenty finalists will be featured in a special exhibition to open at the Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery on July 16, 2009. Launch Party for The Eye on the Strand Contest

Aperture, The Strand Bookstore and Pratt Institute Center for Continuing and Professional Studies (CCPS),will celebrate the launch of The Eye on the Strand photo contest. Amateur and professional photographers alike from all over the world are invited to submit their photo representations of the Strand Bookstore for a chance to win an afternoon with internationally-renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark, a collection of fifty photobooks published by Aperture, and more. A group exhibition will take place at Pratt CCPS Gallery in the summer of 2009 to include all of the winning images.

Aperture artists scheduled to attend, sign their books, and mingle with fans include Michal Chelbin, Donna Ferrato, Paul Fusco, Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz, Stephen Shames, and Hank Willis Thomas, among others.

The Eye on the Strand photo contest will run from November 6, 2008, through February 27, 2009.
