Kick off 2012 and Visit New Exhibitions

Kicking off the 2012 art season, check out highlights on view throughout New York! See below for some of our favorite Aperture artists and galleries.

New Photographers at Dazinger Gallery, January 12–February 25, introducing five emerging photographers unlinked to one another through content but brought together for their first time exhibiting in New York City. Featured photographer Tereza Vlčkovà from Aperture’s groundbreaking book, reGeneration 2: tomorrow’s photographers today.

Silverstein Annual at Bruce Silverstein Gallery, January 14–February 25, offers exposure to ten up-and-coming photographers who have been chosen by ten prominent curators, including Nelli Palomaki, reGeneration 2 artist. View her limited edition prints available through Aperture.

Penetration at Foley Gallery, January 12–March 3, recreates the photographic image with five artists who interrupt the common photographic process. Portfolio Prize 2008 Runner-Up Jowhara AlSaud’s portraits of faceless figures, inspired by censorship, are personal photographs made into drawings etched on the surface of a negative, view her limited edition prints here. Pushing the capabilities of photographic paper itself, Marco Breuer scratches and scrapes the light-sensitive paper making conceptual, abstract imagery. See Breuer’s limited edition book by Aperture Early Recordings and Untitled 2007 and the highly acclaimed compilation The Edge of Vision: The Rise of Abstraction in Photography, he was also featured in Aperture magazine issue 172.

Joel Sternfeld: First Pictures at Luhring Augustine, January 6–February 4, displays a selection of Joel Sternfeld’s earliest photographs, taken between 1971 and 1980, documenting his travels across America through vibrant colors twined with wit and satire.

Visions: Tim Hetherington at Bronx Documentary Center, through January 22, is the inaugural exhibit featuring photography and multimedia work produced by photojournalist Tim Hetherington who was killed in April of 2011 as he covered Libya’s revolution.

First Look at Yossi Milo Gallery, January 26–February 18, is the inaugural exhibition at the new gallery space located at 245 Tenth Avenue. The photographers included all had their first solo New York City exhibition presented by the Yossi Milo Gallery. These artists include Robert Bergman, Mohamed Bourouissa, Pieter Hugo, Simen Johan, Sze Tsung Leong, Loretta Lux, Yuki Onodera, Muzi Quawson, Mark Ruwedel, Alessandra Sanguinetti, Lise Sarfati, Alec Soth, Kohei Yoshiyuki and Liu Zheng. A celebration will be held in honor of these photographers on February 16 from 6:00–8:00 pm.

2010 Benefit and Auction: Online Bidding Now Open

Today is the first day to bid online for items in Aperture’s largest auction ever. Browse Aperture’s Auction Catalog which features photographic works by a diverse range of artists including Jowhara AlSaud, Diane Arbus, Bruce Davidson, Joel Meyerowitz, Richard Misrach, Graham Nash, Mickalene Thomas, Brian Ulrich, James Welling, Kehinde Wiley, Michael Wolf, and Hank Willis Thomas. For the first time ever Aperture is also presenting an Emerging Artists Auction with works by Timothy Briner, Jen Davis, Cig Harvey, Mark Lyon, LaToya Ruby Frazier, and Will Steacy, among many others. Online bidding will remain open through Monday, November 1st at 12:00 noon EST.

Aperture’s 2010 Benefit and Auction will take place at The Lighthouse, Chelsea Piers on November 1st honoring Richard Misrach, Steven Ames, and Julie Saul. Immediately following the Benefit Dinner and Live Auction, the SNAP! Benefit Party co-chaired by Hank Willis Thomas, Carolyn Francis, and Giovanni Tomaselli of Polaroid, will feature special guest DJs, a raffle, an open bar, lite bites and treats.

New York Photo Festival Starts Now

The third annual New York Photo Festival (NYPH) Kicks off today!

This year the festival features Aperture Presents, a series of panel discussions at St. Ann’s Warehouse, curated by Aperture’s editors. Panels will take place each day from 4:30-5:20 p.m.

The first panel taking place this afternoon will feature artists Justine Reyes, Brian Ulrich, and Hank Willis Thomas presenting their work and experiences securing funding, reviews, fellowships, and grants.

Tomorrow Aperture will bring together Amy Elkins, co-founder of Women in Photography; Ariel Shanberg, executive director of the Center for Photography at Woodstock; and Amy Yenkin, director of Open Society Institute, to offer insight on how artists can better benefit from the various opportunities available to them.

In addition Aperture will present a conversation with photographer Eirik Johnson (whose series of photographs Sawdust Mountain is currently on view at Aperture) and picture editor of Orion magazine, Jason Houston. The four day panel series will conclude with an artist’s talk by 2008 Aperture Portfolio Prize runner-up and emerging artist Jowhara AlSaud.

An Exhibition of New Photography at Winkleman Gallery

American ReConstruction, an exhibition of new photography, now on view at the Winkleman gallery in Chelsea, brings together artists constructing photography-based work through pre- and post-printing consideration processes. The show juxtaposes such diverse approaches to image making as 2008 portfolio prize runer-up Jowhara AlSaud’s prints made from manually altered negatives to MP3: vol II featured artist Curtis Mann’s bleached photographs. Also on exhibit will be works by 2009 portfolio prize runner-up Mark Lyon, WIP founder Cara Phillips as well as Matthew Albanese and Jeremy Kost.

The show runs through June 12th.

Aperture Portfolio Prize Winners Announced

Congratulations to Michael Corridore, the winner of the 2008 Aperture Portfolio Prize. From over 1,000 entries, the judges awarded the top prize to this Australian photographer for his project Angry Black Snake. Five runners-up were also selected: Saudi Arabia’s Jowhara AlSaud; Colin Blakely of Ann Arbor, Michigan; Columbia, Missouri’s Joe Johnson; Los Angeles–based Peruvian artist Hector Mata; and Elizabeth Pedinotti of San Francisco.

Aperture Foundation is also delighted to announce, for the first time ever,  a special series of limited-edition prints by the Portfolio Prize winner, Michael Corridore, and runners-up: Jowhara AlSaud; Colin Blakely; Joe Johnson; Hector Mata; and Elizabeth Pedinotti. Affordably priced, the purpose is to encourage the collection of work by emerging artists.
