Join master photographer Joel Meyerowitz for a talk and book signing at The Strand Book Store on the occasion of the publication of Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks. This compelling body of work is the result of a unique commission Meyerowitz received from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document, interpret, and celebrate one of the city’s greatest legacies: nearly nine thousand acres of parks in the five boroughs that still exist close to their original pristine state, as well as areas within parks that have been left to revert to wilderness.

Thank you to everyone for their ongoing support at this year’s annual Benefit & Auction 2009

Friday, November 6th, 2009

Aperture’s annual Benefit and Auction, held at the elegant and chic Lighthouse at Chelsea Piers on Monday, November 2, was a smashing success. This year, pictured below, Aperture honored three key players in the fine art photography community: photographer Joel Meyerowitz, gallery owner Howard Greenberg, and trustee Susana Torruella Leval. The gala was packed with artists, gallerists, curators, collectors, art patrons, and philanthropists, and all appeared to have a fabulous time. We are proud to announce this year’s event raised $500,000 to support Aperture’s publications, exhibitions, and humanities programs. Aperture would like to thank our friends and supporters within the community for their tremendous outpouring of support.

@aperturefnd What type of camera did Joel Meyerowitz use while shooting the NYC parks?
JM: For shooting the parks I used both a Mamiya 6×7 and a 4×5 old wooden field camera.

@aperturefnd ! what have you learned from shooting the nyc parks?
JM: I learned that you can actually find wilderness within nine miles of Times Square.

@aperturefnd What was your biggest surprise working on Legacy?
JM: The biggest surprise was the Hallet Sanctuary at 59th across from the Plaza Hotel- wilderness in the heart of the city.

@aperturefnd Hi Joel, which park do you spend the most time in? Which one has been your favorite discovery while working on this project?
JM: Spent the most time at Pelham Bay in the Bronx. My fav discovery was Udalls Cove in Queens.

@aperturefnd To JM, which photographers or photographs inspired you to pursue photography?
JM: Robert Frank was my turning point and The Americans was the book that taught me the most.

@aperturefnd How do you get a key to the Hallett?
JM: I was only able to access a key to the Hallet Sanctuary because of this special project.

@aperturefnd How many raccoons did you see?
JM: I saw a mother and two baby raccoons at the bottom of Central Park last fall.

@aperturefnd : Hi Joel! Do you think your street shooting days had any impact on your approach to landscape?
JM: Yes my street shooting taught me everything I know. I’m more connected to the intricacies of landscape because of the street.

@aperturefnd Did working on your project Legacy make you feel proud to be a New Yorker?
JM: Legacy and my Ground Zero project both connected me to New York City in a deeper way.

JM: Thank you all for your inspiring questions! I’ll be signing copies of Legacy at the Barnes and Noble on 86th Street tomorrow night 7pm!

Joel Meyerowitz Talk on Legacy: Now Online

Friday, October 16th, 2009

On the occasion of the release of his new monograph Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks (Aperture, October 2009), Photographer Joel Meyerowitz gave a talk at Aperture Gallery presenting the origin and spirit of the project, along with a slide-show of images from the book.
You can watch below an edited excerpt of the talk where Meyerowitz, a gripping story-teller, speaks about his unexpected discoveries along the building of this survey on New York City parks and the making of the book as a collaborative effort with Aperture editor Lesley A. Martin.

This stunningly beautiful collection of images is the result of a unique commission Meyerowitz received from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document, interpret, and celebrate the nearly 9,000 acres of parks in the five boroughs that have been left or returned to their most natural state. Meyerowitz is the first photographer to document New York City’s parks since the 1930s, when they were photographed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA program.

Aperture on Press: Joel Meyerowitz’s Legacy

Tuesday, July 7th, 2009

Aperture Production Manager Matthew Pimm just recently returned from Singapore, where he was on press for Joel Meyerowitz’s Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks at CS Graphics. Meyerowitz’s new title features a rich archive of images of New York City parks, shorelines, and forests, that transport the viewer into the heart of a lush wilderness, while contextualizing these corners of nature as an integral part of city life today. Look for the book in stores this October. An exhibition of photographs from Legacy will open at the Museum of the City of New York this fall.
