American ReConstruction, an exhibition of new photography, now on view at the Winkleman gallery in Chelsea, brings together artists constructing photography-based work through pre- and post-printing consideration processes. The show juxtaposes such diverse approaches to image making as 2008 portfolio prize runer-up Jowhara AlSaud’s prints made from manually altered negatives to MP3: vol II featured artist Curtis Mann’s bleached photographs. Also on exhibit will be works by 2009 portfolio prize runner-up Mark Lyon, WIP founder Cara Phillips as well as Matthew Albanese and Jeremy Kost.

The show runs through June 12th.

Curtis Mann in Whitney Biennial 2010

Monday, December 14th, 2009

mann_mp3_23

Curtis Mann, published in Aperture’s MP3: Vol II this past spring, has been selected as one of four photographers presented in the Whitney Museum of American Art’s Biennial 2010. For his series Modifications, Curtis Mann collects found photographs depicting conflicts in the Middle East and Northern Africa. He then bleaches and scratches the surface of the images, removing information to create new meanings from his source material. Congratulations to Curtis and all those selected for the Biennial 2010, click here to view full list of participating artists.

Midwest Photographers Project Volume II Now on View at MoCP

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Join the three MP3 II artists for a talk about their work on view at the Museum of Contemporary Photography.

For his series Modifications, Curtis Mann collects found photographs depicting conflicts in the Middle East and Northern Africa. He then bleaches and scratches the surface of the images, removing information to create new meanings from his source material. John Opera investigates the uncanny in nature. Moving between representation and geometric abstraction, his works reference historical notions of the sublime and landscape as well as modernist photography. Stacia Yeapanis‘s interest in modes of entertainment and hobbies has led her to explore the simulated-reality computer game The Sims 2, and the craft of embroidery, as she stitches television screen captures of characters in states of distress.
