The Wild Project is pleased to present an exhibition of limited-edition prints produced by Aperture Foundation. Aperture Foundation is a leading photography non-profit dedicated to promoting photography in all its forms based in Chelsea. The exhibition focuses on contemporary artists whose work, in many cases, has been featured in Aperture Magazine, Aperture books, in exhibitions at Aperture Gallery or have been winners of the Portfolio Prize contest. This exhibition features Michel Campeau, Maureen Drennan, Doug DuBois, JH Engström, Todd Hido, Kalle Kataila, Mark Lyon, Edgar Martins, and Bas Princen.

Aperture Foundation is proud to have one of the longest running limited-edition print and portfolio programs in the United States. The print program started in the 1960’s with collaborations between the master photographers Paul Strand and later with Edward Steichen. The print program expanded over the years to offer richly diverse editions and portfolios to art lovers and collectors. Today the program works with several artists’ estates and presents prints that range from masters of the medium, to established contemporary artists and finally highlights many emerging artists of tomorrow. Proceeds from the sales benefit the artists and helps maintain the quality of Aperture’s publications and public programming. The print program supports the organization’s non-profit mission to advance photography in all its forms.

Many thanks to all who made Aperture’s opening reception for Nature as Artifice a great success! The Dutch Ambassador Eric Niehe, Project Manager of NY400 and Ambassador of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs was in attendance and gave a very insightful speech on the occasion of the 400th anniversary of the Dutch arrival in Manhattan.  Curator Maartje van den Heuvel introduced the exhibition with artists Jannes Linders, Hans van der Meer, Bas Princen, Frank van der Salm and Edwin Zwakman, who were also present, see pictures from the event below.

Kicking off the Fall season, Aperture Gallery presents Nature as Artifice: New Dutch Landscape in Photography and Video Art opening Thursday, September 10 coinciding with the 400th anniversary of Henry Hudson’s arrival in New York. Curated by Maartje van den Heuvel, Nature as Artifice presents a major survey of new work by contemporary Dutch artists who, over the past twenty years, have taken contemporary Holland as their inspiration. The exhibition features the work of Hans Aarsman, Wout Berger, Henze Boekhout, Driessens & Verstappen, Marnix Goossens, Arnoud Holleman, Gert Jan Kocken, Jannes Linders, Cary Markerink & Theo Baart, Hans van der Meer, Gábor Ösz, Bas Princen, Xavier Ribas, Gerco de Ruijter, Frank van der Salm, Hans Werlemann, and Edwin Zwakman.
On Saturday, September 12, 2009, Aperture will host a symposium with select artists from the exhibition and other experts on Dutch photography at the School of Visual Arts’s new Visual Arts Gallery. Additionally, on Tuesday, September 15, Aperture Gallery will hold an Artist’s Talk with Hans Aarsman, who explores the myriad of questions involved in taking photographs for purposes as varied as advertising, documentation, and personal mementos.
