“Eye on the Strand” Contest Winners

Aperture, Pratt, and the Strand Book Store are pleased to announce the winners of the Eye on the Strand photography contest, which kicked off last fall and concluded March 31, 2009. The winners were chosen by a prestigious panel of judges from over 500 submissions featuring unique and creative photo representations of the Strand Book Store. The Grand Prize Winner will get to have lunch at New York City’s famous Balthazar Restaurant with world-renowned photographer Mary Ellen Mark, and receive a collection of Aperture books, among other prizes.

The work of the grand prize, second and third place winners and twenty finalists will be featured in a special exhibition to open at the Pratt Institute CCPS Gallery on July 16, 2009. The second annual New York Photo Festival taking place in Dumbo, Brooklyn, Wednesday, May 13, through Sunday, May 17. This year, the four main exhibition pavilions are curated by William A. Ewing, director of Musée de l’Elysée, Lausanne, Switzerland; Chris Boot, head of the London-based publisher Chris Boot, Ltd.; Jody Quon, photography director at New York magazine; and Jon Levy, director of the London-based publisher Foto8. Visit Aperture’s booth in the powerHouse arena to see our latest books and limited-edition photographs. On Thursday evening, May 14, a special book signing and party will take place at the powerHouse arena, starting at 9:00 p.m., with many Aperture artists present to sign their books, including Catherine Chalmers, Michal Chelbin, Doug DuBois, Philip Gefter, Jacqueline Hassink, Charles Lindsay, Walter Martin and Paloma Muñoz, Richard Renaldi, Lyle Rexer, Robin Schwartz, Jonathan Torgovnik and more. For the second year, each day the festival will feature Aperture Presents, a series of panel discussions at St. Ann’s Warehouse.

The New York Photo Festival 2009 starts May 13, 2009, bringing together the latest and greatest in contemporary photography. NYPH09 Curators include William A. Ewing, Chris Boot, Jody Quon, and Jon Levy.

Aperture is proud to announce the return for the second year a series of events titled Aperture Presents to be held Thursday May 14 through Sunday May 17. This series will feature panel discussions and conversations with notables such as Lesley A. MartinPhilip Gefter, and Lyle Rexer among others. Details to be announced shortly.

The New York Photo Awards 2009 will once again honor talented photographers from all over the world whose exceptional work breaks new grounds visually, intellectually and aesthetically. The Awards will give these visual artists the opportunity to reach key decision makers in the photographic community and the editorial, fine art and commercial worlds. Submissions will be accepted starting March 2nd through May 1st, 2009. The Award winners will be announced in May during the second edition of the Festival.

Aperture TV Series Nominated for NY Emmy Award!

Aperture, a television series created and produced by Susan Kravitz, in collaboration with Aperture Foundation, as part of VOOM’s GALLERY HD programming, has been nominated for a New York Emmy award in the category of  Interview/Discussion. The winners of the 52nd Annual New York Emmy® Awards will be announced on Sunday, March 29, 2009 and broadcasted on NYC TV Channel 25, Thursday, April 9, 2009. This acclaimed series features Aperture artists in candid conversation with celebrities who admire their work; each interview takes place in the studio space of the artist offering an intimate behind-the-scenes portrait.  Artist/celebrity pairings include Catherine Chalmers with Rosario Dawson, Vik Muniz with David Byrne, Donna Ferrato with Ally Sheedy, and Justin Guariglia with Lou Reed.

Aperture vs Princeton in an Epic Battle

The stage is set for an epic battle.

On February 11th, Aperture and Princeton Architectural Press held their first official ping pong showdown, with hopefully more to follow. Indeed, Princeton emerged victorious, but now that we’ve collectively remembered how much fun it is, I think Aperture will be getting a little more practice.
