Confounding Expectations Series Now Available to View Online: Access to Life and the Obsolescence of the Photographic Object
For your viewing pleasure during the cold winter days, you can now watch excerpts and full versions from our series of panel discussions Confounding Expectations: Photography in Context presented by Aperture in collaboration with the photography department at Parsons and Vera List Center for Art and Politics at The New School.
Our 2009 series featured the project Access to Life focusing on the topic of photojournalism on AIDS which took place on April 22nd. The Obsolescence of the Photographic Object on February 25th asked what it means when we no longer experience photographs as physical objects, but rather images that reside on screens? and the undeniable shift in the ways we encounter photographic images in the contemporary moment.
Stay tuned next season for more compelling panel discussions from this series at The New School.
In this first excerpt, Mia Fineman, photography curator at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, presents the topic of discussion for the panel The Obsolescence of the Photographic Object. Fineman gives a presentation on how photography has always been a medium revolving around manipulation, even before Photoshop, and how we contextualize and view these images today. Her introduction kicks off the discussion on how our perception of photographic images has changed in the digital age with artists Leslie Hewitt, Miranda Litchtenstein, and Mark Wyse.
