Jacqueline Hassink on Domains of Influence

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Jacqueline Hassink on Domains of Influence from Aperture Foundation on Vimeo.

Watch a short interview with Dutch photographer Jacqueline Hassink speaking about her book Domains of Influence: Arab Women Business Leaders in a New Economy, part of the Aperture Curated Collection. In this clip, Hassink explains the origin of the project, how she collaborated with The Arab International Women’s Forum to reach out to these thirty-six powerful Arab women from eighteen Arab countries and created a unique portrait of them, capturing both the boardroom tables and dining room tables instead of their faces. The resulting work gives the viewer both an alienated and incredibly intimate view of how her subjects conceive of and project their identities and positions. Hassink also gives insight into the design of the book created by Irma Boom. She finally explains the different layers of her artistic projects from the aesthetic to the social level. “I have noticed over the years that my work is not only appreciated in the art world but also in other areas of society,” notes Hassink, “Architectural, sociological and economic readings have all been welcome contributions to the way I think about the work.”

Doug DuBois; Mom and Dad, London.

Opening Thursday, October 29th, at Higher Pictures in New York City is All the Days and Nights, photographs by Doug DuBois. Featuring works from his monograph by the same name, DuBois turned the lens on his family over a twenty-five year period. These personal reflections stimulate more introspection than your average family photos as DuBois conveys the aftermath of his father’s near-death accident and mother’s consequential emotional breakdown.  His capture of mundane moments shine light on the subtle complexities of his evolving family dynamics.  DuBois will attend the opening reception and sign copies of his monograph.

Artist’s Talk with Lorna Simpson

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

Lorna Simpson

Join Aperture and the Parsons Department of Photography for an artist’s talk with Lorna Simpson at Aperture Gallery. Simpson is known for her use of the image of the African-American woman to examine the ways in which gender and culture shape the interactions, relationships, and experiences of our lives in contemporary, multi-racial America. Recently, she has turned her attention to moving images; in film and video works such as Call Waiting, Simpson presents individuals engaged in intimate and enigmatic elliptical conversations that elude easy interpretation while addressing the mysteries of both identity and desire. Her newest works include figurative drawings of characters from her video works and a collection of drawings of women’s heads, turned in profile to reveal their various hairstyles. Simpson is currently creating installations involving found vintage photographs accompanied by her own drawings and new photography.

Sawdust Mountain at The Henry Art Gallery: Seattle

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Eirik Johnson; Adultbooks
The Henry Art Gallery in Seattle opens an exhibition this week featuring works from Eirik Johnson’s recently published Sawdust Mountain, accompanied by 19th-century photographs from the University of Washington Special Collections by photographers such as Darius Kinsey, curated by Johnson. He will also give an artist’s talk on Thursday in celebration of the opening. Eirik Johnson describes his photographs as “a melancholy love letter of sorts, my own personal ramblings.” Through this poetic approach, Eirik Johnson: Sawdust Mountain records a region affected by historic economic complexities and, by extension, one aspect of our fraught relationship with the environment in the twenty-first century.

This stunningly beautiful collection of images is the result of a unique commission Meyerowitz received from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document, interpret, and celebrate the nearly 9,000 acres of parks in the five boroughs that have been left or returned to their most natural state. Meyerowitz is the first photographer to document New York City’s parks since the 1930s, when they were photographed as part of Franklin D. Roosevelt’s WPA program.
