Thomas Allen Exhibition and Video from talk at Aperture

Wednesday, September 30th, 2009

Don’t miss Thomas Allen’s exhibition Epilogue on view at Michael Foley Gallery in New York through October 10th. In this new series of work, the narrative is reduced to the final scene, often the scene of the crime and is Allen’s final foray using his unique process of cutting and folding the covers of vintage pulp fiction novels to create imaginative scenes filled with drama, suspense and sensuality.  The short clip below is an excerpt from his discussion with designer Chip Kidd in the fall of 2007 on the release of his Aperture book, Uncovered, where these images have been gathered and published for the first time.

Part 3

Designed as a toy-like board book, Uncovered (Aperture, 2007) reflects the spirit of the project that is nostalgic, irreverent, and downright fun. Allen is in conversation with Chip Kidd, the internationally renowned graphic designer, author, comic book expert, and associate art director at Alfred A. Knopf, who wrote the foreword to Uncovered and has used Allen’s work in his award-winning design.

legacy-cover

Join master photographer Joel Meyerowitz for a talk on his work documenting the hidden pockets of nature that still exist within the urban environs of the city for the publication of Legacy: The Preservation of Wilderness in New York City Parks. This compelling body of work is the result of a unique commission Meyerowitz received from the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation to document, interpret, and celebrate the least developed areas within one of the city’s greatest legacies: the twenty-nine thousand acres of parks in the five boroughs. An exhibition of this series will be on view at the Museum of the City of New York, October 9, 2009 though March 7, 2010.

Legacy is now available through Aperture!

New Exhibitions on View

Brian Ulrich; Powerhouse Gym, 2008

Below is an update on some of the latest goings on with three Aperture artists. On view at the Greenberg Van Doren Gallery in New York, The New Antiquity, features work from artist Tim Davis. Similar in tone to My Life in Politics, Davis surveys contemporary culture with his decisive lens, always with an element of wit and skepticism.

Photographer Brian Ulrich of MP3: Midwest Photographers Publication Project, is on display at Robert Koch Gallery in San Francisco. His exhibition, Dark Stores responds to the 2001 call from the U.S. government to stimulate the economy through shopping. The work presents a skeptical gaze at the over-developed suburban retail landscape that is instantly recognizable, even considering his omission of logos and brand names.

One of the artists from Aperture’s The Edge of Vision: Abstraction in Contemporary Photography, artist Silvio Wolf has a solo exhibition in Milan, Before Time, featuring works created specifically for Galleria Nicoletta Rusconi that explores the dynamic relationship between object and viewer. Wolf’s project was conceived as a single work consisting of seven different elements, which form a series of stations. After spending years examining images and their role in contemporary society, Wolf now shifts focus to the viewer and to the resulting interaction from this relationship. Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans at the Met

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Parade — Hoboken, New Jersey, from the Americans © Robert Frank

Robert Frank’s infamous body of work, The Americans, commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the book’s publication opened this week at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City . The show, titled Looking In: Robert Frank’s The Americans, features the most in-depth look at arguably the most important photo book published since World War II and includes over 100 photographs, 17 books, 15 manuscripts and 22 contact sheets as well as a short film made by Frank for this exhibition. This show explores not only the roots of America as captured by one of photography’s legends, but also functions as an exploration on the photo book itself as the viewer can take note of Frank’s intentional sequencing and organization. For all those interested in the photo book, this show is not to be missed! The Museum will also host many events including An Evening With Robert Frank, already sold out, in which the artist will be in conversation with curators Jeff L. Rosenheim and Sarah Greenough about his career in photography and film. Through the month of October, the Met will screen films from the artist as well, click below to view schedule of showtimes.

Torbjørn Rødland at Aperture Gallery

Monday, September 21st, 2009

© Torbjørn Rødland

Aperture and the Parsons Department of Photography at The New School present an artist’s talk with Norweigan photographer Torbjørn Rødland. Rødland is to photography what the Pet Shop Boys are to pop music, a master of delicately orchestrated cliché overload—a surplus of the too obvious, too cute, or too inane, extended to the point where the images are drained of all trace of commonsense and suggest a newfound silence or mystery.
