David Hilliard Opens at Yancey Richardson Gallery

Known for his vivid color photographs, David Hilliard’s triptychs or larger compositions, present complex narratives and explore various themes and situations like the awkwardness of adolescence and masculinity disarmed.

His first book, David Hilliard: Photographs was published by Aperture in 2006.

Tomorrow, join two-time Academy-award winning actor Jessica Lange at a reception honoring her first photography exhibition. Lange, known for her roles in Tootsie and Blue Sky among others, is showing images from 15 years of world travel. Selections from this work were first published in the Spring 2007 issue of Aperture magazine, where it was said, “Jessica’s photographs very much reflect her personality. They are delicate, but powerful…loving, warm, and extremely poetic.” A companion book, 50 Photographs, with an introduction by Patti Smith, is now available from powerHouse Books.

As part of the ongoing lecture series hosted by Aperture and presented by the department of photography, Parsons The New School for Design, Tina Barney will discuss her work. Since 1975, Barney has been producing large-scale photographs of family and friends. Barney’s subjects are often seen in complex photographic compositions that invite intimate study of the behavior, social class, and notions of privilege suggested by the clothing, picturesque environments, and luxurious settings they inhabit. Barney’s photographs have appeared in the acclaimed books Tina Barney: Theater of Manners (Scalo), and in The Europeans (Steidl). Her work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museums around the world.

An exhibition of Duane Michals’s series, “Photographs from the Floating World,” is now on view at Pace/MacGill Gallery. The exhibition features images from Michals’s early experimentation with non-commercial color photography coupled with original descriptions. He has described this body of work as revealing “the real world of appearances in which we live.” Michals was featured in the Fall 2008 issue of Aperture for his “Chromophilia” series wherein he was commended for his ability to “exercise the prerogative of allowing his work to evolve and change.”

Design Marathon and book signing with Martin Parr at The Wolfsonian.

The Wolfsonian is giving thirty-five artists and designers a stage and five minutes each to express whatever they like. The event honors Dutch designer Wim Crouwel and celebrates our right to freedom of expression. Debbie Millman of Design Matters moderates the marathon, which features Wim Crouwel, Martin Parr, Elliott Earls, Chip Kidd, Richard Tuttle, Lawrence Weiner, and other contributors to Thoughts on Democracy. The marathon includes booksignings in The Dynamo Museum Shop by participant authors including Martin Parr. Limited-edition prints of the Dec. 5 Art Basel Open House and Thoughts on Democracy limited-edition portfolios by Parr will also be available for purchase

Tonight at Aperture – Tomorrow at The New School

Aperture Educational programs present two wonderful events this week. Tonight Aperture’s Spotlight Series is pleased to present an evening with J&L Books. Photographer/designer Jason Fulford and artist/designer Leanne Shapton, co-founders of the small non-profit press J&L Books, will host a unique and extraordinary variety show at Aperture Gallery—featuring live performances by noted photographers, artists, writers, and designers. Wednesday evening the series Confounding Expectations: Photography in Context presented in collaboration with Vera List Center for Art and Politics and Parsons the New School for Design will feature a panel discussion with artists from the exhibition Street Art, Street Life (currently on view at the Bronx Museum of the Arts), including Barbara Moore, Martha Rosler, and Jamel Shabazz. Moderated by Whitney Rugg, Curatorial Fellow at the Bronx Museum.
