Preview 2010 Aperture Benefit and Auction items

Join Aperture for its 2010 Benefit and Auction on November 1st honoring photographer Richard Misrach; collector, philanthropist, former Aperture Trustee Steven Ames; and gallerist Julie Saul. This year’s auction will be Aperture’s largest ever with opportunities to bid on an exciting roster of prints by Diane Arbus, Bruce Davidson, Susan Meiselas, Joel Meyerowitz, Curtis Mann, Mickalene Thomas, Paul Strand, James Welling, Hank Willis Thomas and Kehinde Wiley among others.

Directly following the Benefit and Auction, the first-ever SNAP! Benefit Party and Emerging Artists Silent Auction hosted by SNAP!, Aperture’s Young Patrons Program will feature music spun by special guests DJs, an open bar, and great raffle prizes. The Emerging Artists Auction includes rising photographers such as Timothy Briner, Jen Davis, Adam Krause, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Will Steacy and many more.

Capture Brooklyn Photo Contest

A new initiative by the New York Photo Festival, Capture Brooklyn is a juried exhibition of contemporary photography that seeks to capture the spirit and essence of Brooklyn as a way of promoting and celebrating New York-based photographers.  The jury this year will be Mike Foley, Founder of Foley Gallery; Susanne Konig, Director of The powerHouse Arena; Teresa Rad, Director of Art Production at TBWA\Chiat\Day – New York; and Doug Rickard, Founder & Editor in Chief of AmericanSuburbX.com

Three top prize winners will be selected, and 80 photographs chosen from submissions will be exhibited at The powerHouse Arena in Dumbo, Brooklyn.  The show’s official opening will coincide with this year’s Dumbo Arts Festival (September 24-26), and the exhibition will continue until October 15, 2010.

Zwelethu Mthethwa was recently featured on Flak Photo’s (http://www.flakphoto.com) Weekend Series (a weekly feature highlighting new photo essays, book projects and gallery exhibitions) and now Flakphoto has partnered with Aperture to give away three copies of Zwelethu Mthethwa’s new monograph to facebook fans.

Mthethwa’s recent self-titled monograph and exhibition Inner Views at The Studio Museum in Harlem have received widespread critical acclaim. New Limited-Edition from artist Jowhara AlSaud

Newly available from Aperture’s Limited Edition print program is a new image from artist Jowhara AlSaudTen/Ten from AlSaud’s Out of Line series explores censorship in Saudi Arabia and it’s effects on visual communication through a practice of transforming personal photographs with line drawings, circumventing and commenting on some of the cultural taboos associated with photography and the personal portrait.

AlSaud’s work has recently been seen in several group exhibitions including the Edge of Arabia show at the 2010 Berlin Biennial. Upcoming exhibitions include solo shows in Kuwait and Amsterdam as well as a group show at the Shanghai Biennale.

Photography Now: Either/And at the Center for Photography at Woodstock

The Center for Photography at Woodstock’s 2010 Photography Now exhibit Either/And, curated by Aperture’s Lesley A. Martin, is currently on view. Culling from submissions of artist’s work, the exhibit considers “What defines contemporary practice?” in two parts.

The first part of the exhibit entitled The New Skew opened this weekend and highlights conceptual works that challenge photographic traditions by artists Erica Allen, Gabriel Garcia Roman, Matthew Gamber, Sarah Palmer, Jordan Tate, Rachel Bee Porter, Charles Shotwell, Amy Stevens, Sam Falls and Laura Wulf.

Part two of the exhibit, which opens July 26th, is entitled The New Docugraphics and brings together artist’s Cynthia Bittenfield, Jennifer Wilkey, Brook Reynolds, Natan Dvir, Eric White, Heather O’Brien, Thomas Gardiner, Tony Chirinos, Mike Mergen, whom explore personal and timely issues and events within a documentary framework.

On view during both shows will be a digital slideshow of images from their counterparts.
