Aperture is pleased to present a special evening with performances and a one-night exhibition organized by photographer/designer Jason Fulford and artist/designer Leanne Shapton, co-founders of the small non-profit press J&L books ( jandlbooks.org ), to celebrate the release of three new titles.

The Plan by Michael Schmelling, text by Richard Maxwell
Maxwell's essay, "Life Beyond Irony," will be performed by actress Tory Vazquez. An exhibition of found and salvaged objects, as well as items constructed by Schmelling, will be on view.

Weavings by Corin Hewitt, text by Michael Brenson and Marisa Sanchez
Hewitt will be making arrangements on glass that will be transmitted onto a screen in a separate room. He will make these images by combining the material of the three books being featured at the event using video and a Polaroid camera. One of these Polaroids will be included with each copy of his book that is sold during the evening.

Landmasses and Railways by Bertrand Fleuret
Landmasses and Railways is a photographic travelogue to our interior, or perhaps an exploration outwards, to the encircling spheres above. Divided into five sections—I. The Melancholy of Departure, II. Approaching the City, III. Inside The Walls, IV. An Empty Building, and V. The Garden—the book takes us on a winding journey through a strange but familiar world.

J&L Books is a non-profit Atlanta/New York—based publisher of artists' books. Since 2000, they have gained recognition for their unique eye, idiosyncratic style, and strong commitment to emerging artists. With their engaging book program, J&L has quickly distinguished itself as an impressive and celebrated independent publisher of photography.

Our educational programming is generously supported by the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs,
