At The New School - New York, NY

Publication Launches

Photography & Fashion’s Maverick Magazines

Wednesday, October 8

6:30 p.m. EDT

The New School, The Auditorium at 66 West 12th Street , New York, NY

The magazine form is central to the story of fashion photography. In conjunction with the release of Aperture magazine’s “Fashion” issue, guest-edited by the esteemed fashion photography duo Inez & Vinoodh, this panel will explore the role of the magazine as a platform for innovation in fashion photography and for fostering the careers of many of the industry’s most important image-makers. The conversation will touch upon independent magazines of the 1990s, such as i-D and the Face, and explore how publications today expand a tradition forged by these groundbreakers. Speakers include Inez & Vinoodh, who came up working for the Face in the 1990s and have since photographed for most major fashion publications; Penny Martin, editor of The Gentlewoman; Phil Bicker, creative director, designer, and formerly art director at the Face where he championed and first published the work of David Sims, Corinne Day, and Juergen Teller, among others; and Charlotte Cotton, visiting faculty in photography at Parsons The New School for Design and author of The Photograph as Contemporary Art (2004).

Sponsored by Aperture Foundation, Parsons Photography, and the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, and funded in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council, and the board and Members of Aperture Foundation.
