Looking at Me, Looking at You, Looking at Us: Aperture Community Educational Partnerships Exhibition
Saturday, April 26
3:00 p.m. EDT
Join Aperture for the opening reception of Looking at Me, Looking at You, Looking at Us, an exhibition of photographs and photobooks by students from the Grand St. Settlement and Hudson Guild Beacon Community Centers. The exhibition is the culmination of a new visual-literacy curriculum implemented through Aperture’s Community Education Partnerships. The program uses photography to teach students how to understand images, while developing strong critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Led by teaching artists, the students developed a visual vocabulary, making photographs and photobooks throughout the semester. Aperture is excited to exhibit work by all the program participants through May 3, 2014. Remarks by Aperture Foundation deputy director Sarah McNear at noon.
The 2013/14 program was made possible by grants from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with City Council, the Manhattan Community Grant Program, and the Pinkerton Foundation, with support provided by Grand St. Settlement and Hudson Guild. Aperture has received additional support from the Pinkerton Foundation and a gift from Agnes Gund to expand this program for the next academic year into additional schools and Beacon Centers.
