At Aperture, we love people who love books, and David Strettell–aka Dashwood Books—is one of those people. We were excited that he recently took the plunge into the world of publishing, and his first artist's book, The Chance is Higher, is a thoughtfully designed volume produced by someone who understands the careful attention it takes to create a book that honestly reflects the sensibility of the artist. The texture and ambience of this publication is rough, raw, and supremely gorgeous. As David describes it, the pages "are not Xeroxes themselves but beautiful reproductions of them. An artist's book that seamlessly combines photographs of Marcopoulos's family, skate pictures, graffiti, landscape and portraiture. Ari feels it is his best book to date and I am very proud of how it came out. Working together with the designer Gilles Gavillet, we were looking to produce something that felt very fine but with a punk/street sensibility.  It was pretty dangerous territory but I feel we really pulled it off." Spoken like the dangerous salesman/connoisseur that he is (I have yet to walk out of David's bookshop empty handed), he reports that he’s  received "a great reaction to the book - selling over four fifths of the edition in the first six months (I have only a few copies of the deluxe edition left)." Vince Aletti gave it a rave review for Photography NY: "No pretty pictures here, only gorgeously degraded ones. Marcopoulos doesn't just challenge the tyranny of perfection, he offers an alternative to it: Funk deluxe."

His latest solo exhibition entitled 'Fear God' can be seen at The Project Gallery in New York until December 19.
